Independent educational consultants insist that it is essential for educators to adapt calming strategies for the classroom, as studies show that children who learn calming techniques show improvement in attention and concentration, behaviour and self concept.
When a child is calm and alert, they are more able to engage in higher level thinking tasks, solve problems, be creative, learn and remember.
The Calm for Kids Curriculum Program costs $15 per student and includes:
8 x 35 minute weekly relaxation classes per student
Weekly handout information sheets for parents
Additional teacher information / activity sheets
A similar program undertaken in Pittsburgh, USA, reported that a 12 week program of relaxation and yoga incorporated into weekly physical education classes was successful in providing students and teachers with self-help tools to manage emotional and physical stress; positively affected children's social and psychological development in terms of self esteem and confidence; and positively affected children's academic development in terms of concentration and classroom behaviour.
Classroom teachers were asked to report on their students before and after the Program and teachers responded that they felt that their students were 90% less restless, 80% less anxious and 100% less tense. The teachers of students participating in the Program also reported the students were 66% more calm, 45% more focused and 17% more confident.

'I definitely feel that for some children there has been a change - more focused, less anxious'
