Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
We believe that Calm for Kids succeeds in developing the following core social and emotional competencies:

Self-awareness:
Tthrough discussion on how to use the breath to calm the students, we are teaching them how to recognise negative emotions; giving the students the opportunity to improve their balance and physical poise can contribute to an increased sense of self-confidence, as can the use of positive affirmations

Self-management:
The use of the breath, relaxation and visualisations are all tools to regulate emotions to handle stress, control impulses, facilitate calm in a given situation, and motivate students to persevere in overcoming obstacles; visualisations and positive affirmations assist students with expressing emotions appropriately

Social awareness:
Rresponsible interpersonal interaction enables students to recognise and appreciate individual and group similarities and differences

Responsible decision-making:
Calm for Kids works with the students breath to calm their mind before making decisions. The more calm you are the more options you are likely to consider in any circumstance; you will not only have a clearer immediate response but are more likely to consider consequences of your actions and you are likely to be able to think through a problem creatively.

Provides opportunities for students to develop positive social skills that can be used anywhere and at any time, and understandings of identity.

Is sequential in nature and builds week by week, year by year, on what students have previously learnt to provide the foundation for long-term use. As students move up through the grades of the school, the concepts are reinforced (with teacher assistance) as activities are practiced and then connected to daily life in and out of the classroom.

Covers most of the core social and emotional competencies.

Encourages a whole school approach to the implementation of the program to ensure a consistent approach across the school and to reinforce the strategies within the program.

Has additional professional development workshops available for teachers and other staff involved in implementing the program. Supplementary activities are offered to teachers to support weekly learning’s and to provide teachers with simple tools that support class and school educational and wellness objectives.

Provides for parent participation and education. Templates of weekly information sheets for parents are provided to reinforce concepts, processes and skills at home.

Calm for Kids classes provide students with a complementary balance to the competitive, fast paced exercise offered by other sports and activities.

Simple relaxation techniques empower children to develop caring attitudes to each other and to feel the freedom of experiencing quietness and the simplicity of ‘being’ in their day to day lives. As the children embrace the classes wide reaching benefits will emerge including life skills such as listening to others, appreciating others experiences, sharing imaginative journeys, respecting others feeling and a general sense of calmness, contentment and focus.

Having Calm for Kids classes at your School will be seen by current and prospective parents and students as a valuable additional service. The calming effect of the lesson on the children will follow through when the children are collected and go home with her parents.

By making the classes available in your School parents do not have to fit the lessons into an already tight schedule. The children will participate in classes without the need for parents to take them there. This will be valuable to time stretched parents.
